We are greatly saddened to report the passing of Dr. Robert Bruce Salter on May 10, 2010, at the age of 85. An internationally renowned surgeon, Dr. Salter was a leader and pioneer in orthopaedics, and contributed enormously to the profession in such areas as fracture classification, DDH and joint repair. Many of his innovations are now part of mainstream practice. For 55 years, Dr. Salter was a faculty member at the University of Toronto and on staff at the Hospital for Sick Children, during which time he trained scores of paediatric orthopaedists and wrote numerous scientific articles and textbooks. In the course of his career, Dr. Salter held the University of Toronto's chair of orthopaedic surgery, became the surgeon-in-chief at the Hospital for Sick Children, served as president of the Canadian Orthopaedic Association and was a member of the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame and a Companion of the Order of Canada.
