1) SPECIAL INVITE TO SAN DIEGO
The COA would like to invite all of its members to attend a reception during the upcoming AAOS Annual Meeting in San Diego, CA. Join your colleagues and friends on Thursday, February 15, 2007 at 18:30 in the Courtyard of the Horton Grand Hotel: Three-Eleven Island Avenue (619) 544-1886. We look forward to seeing you there! Thank you to the MEDEC group of companies for sponsoring this event.

2) OSAE RESPONSES ARE DUE!
Those participating in the Orthopaedic Self Assessment Exam (OSAE) are reminded to submit their completed answer sheets to the COA Office using the addressed envelope that was included in the exam package or by mail to: 360‑4150 Ste. Catherine St. W., Westmount, QC, H3Z 2Y5. Response sheets will be graded as a block by the AAOS and must be received by February 5th in order to be included in the scoring.

3) DOCTORS SPEAK OUT ON SPECIALTY CARE
Almost 4,000 doctors provided their thoughts on improving specialty care during a seven-week online consultation this fall put on by the Canadian Medical Association (CMA), in collaboration with provincial, national and specialty medical organizations across the country.

"I recognize that participating in this consultation required a substantial commitment of time, and I'm grateful to colleagues from across the country and from all areas of practice who took part," said Dr. Colin McMillan, President of the CMA. "Our commitment to you is to take your input and use it to press for changes that improve the care you provide to your patients."

Overall, there were 899 family physicians, 477 residents, and 505 students who participated, with the remaining 1,838 representing specialists from across the spectrum of practice. The volume of input far exceeded what organizers had hoped for.

The analysis will be an ongoing effort, with the first report going to the Committee of National Medical Organizations (CNMO) at a meeting scheduled for late January. The CNMO will develop an action plan for moving forward on the findings. Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.

4) COA BULLETIN GOES VIRTUAL
COA members can get a sneak peek of the COA Bulletin before the journal arrives in your mailbox! By logging in to the COA web site, members can view the next edition of the Bulletin up to three weeks before its print release. A notice will be posted on the COA homepage when the upcoming Spring 2007 edition is posted online.

The online version of the Bulletin has another perk - an area where members can post comments on any article. We value your feedback and encourage everyone to try out this feature by visiting http://www.coa-aco.org/ > login on the home page, click on ‘Member Services' > ‘COA Bulletin' and select any edition to leave your comments on an article of interest.

Unsure of your username and password? Your username is your first initial and last name in lowercase characters without any spaces (i.e., your name is Doug Thomson, your username is dthomson). Click on the ‘Lost Password' link below the login box and enter your username and e-mail address to obtain your password. Be sure to enter the e-mail address that the COA has on file in its database.

5) CREATE A LEGACY OF RESEARCH!
One hour of operating room time, or $300, is a modest commitment that every surgeon in Canada can make to create a legacy for orthopaedic research. Make the vision a reality by donating to the Canadian Orthopaedic Research Legacy. Visit the Canadian Orthopaedic Foundation's web site at http://www.canorth.org/, click on For Professionals, then Research Legacy to make an on-line donation or to obtain the form to mail your donation. To make a donation by phone contact Diane Butcher at 1-800-461-3639 x 4.

Reminder, deadline to apply for research awards is approaching fast. Deadline for J. Édouard Samson Award is February 15, 2007; all other awards, including the first ever CORL grant, is February 28, 2007.
