1) ANNUAL MEETING - A HIT IN HALIFAX!
The 2007 COA Annual Meeting that took place from June 1-3 in Halifax was a resounding success. Hosted by Local Chairs, Dr. Joe Hyndman and Bill Stanish, the meeting boasts some of the highest registration numbers that we've seen in over a decade. Over 300 Active members attended the event along with 150 residents and fellows from across the country. Dr.Brian Day, the meeting's Presidential Guest Speaker, presented a most memorable talk during the Opening Ceremonies while Dr. William R. J. Rennie's R.I. Harris Lecture was equally impressive. The feedback that we've received through the session evaluation forms clearly states that the membership was more than satisfied with the quality of the scientific programme. The Saturday night Lobster Bash was likely one of the largest social events that the COA has ever seen. Close to 800 delegates feasted on lobster while being entertained by local talent Bruce Guthro and friends. A very special thank you and congratulations should be extended to the meeting's Local Arrangements Committee and Programme Committee for their outstanding efforts and contributions made throughout the year. A complete wrap-up and review of the Meeting will be included in the Fall 2007 edition of the COA Bulletin.
Mark your calendars for the 2008 COA Annual Meeting that will take place in Quebec City from June 4-7. This event is a combined meeting with the American Orthopaedic Association. Please keep your eyes on the COA web site for the call for abstracts opening soon: http://www.coa-aco.org/.
2) RESIDENTS MAKE THEIR MARK ON HALIFAX
Over 95 residents from across the country attended the recent Canadian Orthopaedic Residents' Association (CORA) Annual Meeting that was held earlier this month. For the first time since 2003, residents from all 16 orthopaedic training programmes were in attendance. We'd like to thank all of the programme directors for continuing to encourage their residents to attend this important event. Hosted by Drs. Nadia Murphy and Ben Smith of Dalhousie University, the CORA meeting included 20 resident research presentations along with an hour and half of hands-on workshops hosted by some of our MEDEC partners. Dr. Danny Goel from the University of Calgary was awarded third prize for his paper: "Deep Vein Thrombosis Prophylaxis in Distal Lower Extremity Fractures - A Prospective Randomized Controlled Trial". Dr. Alexander Rabinovich from McMaster won second prize for his paper: "Protease Activity in the Stromal Cells of Giant Cell Tumour of Bone". Dr. Isaac Moss from the University of Toronto took home the top prize this year for the best paper presented in the CORA programme. His abstract: "A Novel Composite Elastin and Hyaluronan Scaffold for Nucleus Pulposus Tissue Engineering" along with the other award winners will be published in the Fall 2007 edition of the COA Bulletin. Congratulations!
3) TRAUMA SURGEONS - THIS SURVEY IS FOR YOU!
The Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA) is asking all trauma surgeons to take five minutes to complete quick 6-question online survey on the standard of care needed to follow-up subcapital fractures of the hip. This survey is being undertaken to establish standard duration follow-up protocol for patients following hip pinning for subcapital femoral neck fractures. This will be carried out by conducting a survey that contains different options for duration of follow-ups based on age (<55, 55-70, >70) and fracture displacement (displaced, non displaced). Please click on this link (or cut and paste it into your web browser) to complete the survey: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=rKHNGwK9ZESgLtK2Tgub7g_3d_3d

4) AND THE WINNER IS...
The Canadian Orthopaedic Foundation is pleased to announce that the winners of the first annual Canadian Orthopaedic Research Legacy (CORL) award are Drs. Mark Glazebrook, Tim Daniels, Alastair Younger and the COFAS research team - virtually all of Canada's foot-and-ankle surgeons. Glazebrook proposes to shift gears from his three-year-old prospective study comparing ankle arthrodesis with ankle arthroplasty to a long-term (15 years) randomized clinical trial of the two procedures. "To have our work validated with this particular award is very gratifying," says Glazebrook. "Our thanks, especially, go to Dr. Paul Wright, whose vision and drive made the CORL award possible and to all the members of the COFAS research team. It's a real honour to be the first recipients."
