2) THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING Hip Hip Hooray!hhh_eng
Thank you to all the surgeons, nurses and healthcare professionals from coast-to-coast who helped make the 2011 Hip Hip Hooray! event a success. With your support, more than $100,000 has been raised to date and will be invested into local communities through the production and distribution of educational materials and resources. THANK YOU!

3) SINAI SURGEON BOOK ORDERS
COA Past President, R. Mervyn Letts MD, former UNEF Medical Officer RCAF has written a book chronicling the adventures, day-to-day activities and challenges of a military medical officer trying to maintain the health of explanted Canadian airman in a hot desert environment, the Sinai desert of Egypt, in the midst of the impending Six Day War between Israel and the Arab States.  Aside from managing gastroenteritis, dehydration and the trauma of bites, the sun and military misadventure in Canadian Peacekeepers, the author, F/L Merv Letts, shares with us his trips into the desert and to desert outposts such as Sharm el Sheikh to treat the desert nomads, the Bedouin.

Interspersed throughout the book are descriptions of flights to exotic locations such as Yemen, St. Catherine's Monastery, the Cedars of Lebanon, and the ancient sandstone city of Petra.  The mystique of Bedouin markets, Arabic souqs and desert encampments are shared with the readers.

The history of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in the Middle East is reviewed with particular emphasis on the United Nations Emergency Force I and the 115 Air Transport Unit. The trials and tribulations of the events leading up to the 1967 Six Day War are documented particularly how they impacted on the Canadian forces deployed in the Sinai Desert.

4) ASSESSING RISK IN ARTHROPLASTY SURVEY REMINDER
Active members of the COA are reminded to participate in a survey of international orthopaedic surgeons on risk assessement in arthoplasty.  This study is being conducted by an orthopaedic trainee in New Zealand with the support of the New Zealand Orthopaedic Association. This survey is to ascertain what international surgeons feel is an acceptable level of complication and risk in lower limb arthroplasty patients (hip and knee) for three key conditions: deep infection, pulmonary embolus and hip dislocation. Baseline rates used for these complications are derived from a medline search of the last ten years with the specific references and search criteria on the last (5th) page of the questionnaire. If you have not yet completed the survey, please click here to participate: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/2GQLZFK Inquiries can be directed to Chris Wainwright This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. 5) BONE & JOINT RESEARCH
For over sixty years JBJS (Br) has brought you the results of critical new findings in clinical research, ensuring that surgeons work to the very highest standards based on the latest available evidence. Now we are launching Bone & Joint Research (BJR), an exciting new journal (and completely separate to JBJS (Br) which will continue as usual) to greatly increase access to musculoskeletal research information.

Bone & Joint Research (BJR) will publish under the stewardship of Editor-in-Chief, Professor Andy Carr, Nuffield Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Oxford, using an innovative open-access publishing model.  This means all articles published in BJR will be freely available online, giving our authors' work the widest possible audience.

Bone & Joint Research is now accepting submissions, including clinical and translational laboratory studies as well as studies from the device and pharmaceutical industries.

The journal is now live at www.bjr.boneandjoint.org.uk or to submit your paper http://orthodox.jbjs.org.uk.
