4) COA RELEASES POSITION STATEMENT ON INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE The COA recognizes that intimate partner violence is a significant social determinant of morbidity and mortality, and that orthopaedic surgeons are well positioned to identify patients living with IPV and initiate an intervention. We encourage our members to educate themselves further about intimate partner violence and considers it good medical practice to take steps to identify and offer assistance to its victims. The complete position statement and appendix is available on the COA web site: www.coa-aco.org under the "Member Services" > "Health Policy" tabs. Here is a direct link. A special thanks to Dr. Mohit Bhandari (McMaster University) for leading the IPV Working Group.

6) HOW MANY WOMEN ORTHOPAEDIC SURGEONS ARE IN CANADA? There are currently 80 women practicing orthopaedics in Canada. This figure, along with several other updated manpower statistics, was presented by Dr. Ted Rumble (past National Standards Committee Chair) during the recent Women in Orthopaedics (WIO) meeting in Whistler, BC. Dr. Rumble's discourse is posted on the WIO page under the "Societies" menu on the COA web site. Click here to read his manpower update. The COA acknowledges DePuy Canada, Johnson & Johnson Medical Products, a Division of Johnson & Johnson Inc. for the unrestricted educational grant that made this session possible.
7) 2009 CORA MEETING The Canadian Orthopaedic Residents' Association (CORA) held its conference earlier this month in Whistler. With much success, the CORA meeting sessions were incorporated for the first time into the COA scientific program, making the residents' presentations accessible to all COA meeting attendees. Hosted by Drs. Kelly Apostle and Gerard Slobogean of UBC, the CORA meeting included 12 resident research presentations along with the first ever Career Development Symposium. Congratulations are extended to Drs. Jas Chahal (University of Toronto), Julian Sernik (University of Alberta) and Peter Lewkonia (University of Calgary) for winning first, second and third prize respectively for their research papers presented during the conference. The winning abstracts will be published in the Fall 2009 edition of the COA Bulletin. 160 residents and fellows attended the COA meeting this year.
