Doug Thomson CEO, The Canadian Orthopaedic Association & The Canadian Orthopaedic Foundation Over 85 orthopaedic residents from across Canada attended the 29th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Orthopaedic Residents Association (CORA) in St. John's, Newfoundland in September.
The two-day scientific programme included resident papers of excellent quality on various topics including paediatrics, basic science, arthroplasty, sports medicine, spine and trauma. Of the 24 papers presented, four were selected by a panel of adjudicators to receive the annual CORA awards, which recognize the outstanding quality of the presentations. The COSA Award for the best science paper was presented to two recipients this year, as the panel rated them both equally outstanding. Dr. Daniel Garneau, from the Université de Laval, was recognized for his paper entitled "Comparative Bio- mechanical Analysis of a Locking Condylar Plate and a Retrograde Intramedullary Nail for Supracondylar Femur Fracture Fixation" and Dr. Stephen Walsh from the University of Calgary received the award for "Biomechanical Comparison of a Unique Plate versus a Standard Plate for Internal Fixation of Proximal Humerus Fractures in a Cadaveric Model". The Alexandra Kirkley Award for best clinical paper was awarded to Dr. Michael McCaffrey from Memorial University of Newfoundland for his paper "Methyl Prednisolone Acetate vs. Triamcinolone for the Symptomatic Treatment of Osteoarthritis of the Knee, a Randomized Controlled Trial". | | The 2003 CORA Award Winners (L to R): Doctors Stephen Walsh, Sean Frost, Mike McCaffrey, Daniel Garneau | Dr. Sean Charles Lucas Frost, of the University of Western Ontario, was honoured with the 2003 J.A. Nutter Award for the best overall paper presented at the CORA meeting. Dr. Frost's presentation was entitled "The Role of Regulatory T-Cells in Periprosthetic Osteolysis Following Total Hip Arthroplasty". An important component of the scientific programme was the special presentations by the guest speakers. Dr. Michael D. McKee participated in the CORA conference as National Guest Speaker by delivering two talks, adjudicating the papers and even coming up with his own special "Endurance & Stamina" award presentation at the banquet. COA President, Dr. Robert M. Hollinshead, also participated in the conference by giving a talk on shoulder instability and on the past, present and future roles that the COA will play in Canadian orthopaedics. Included in the guest lecturers were some local faculty from the departments of orthopaedics and rheumatology, and Dr. Frank Mahovlich, Hall of Fame Hockey player and current member of Canada's Senate, also presented to the meeting participants and afterwards, signed autographs and was the subject of several photo-ops. The CORA annual meeting has evolved to become an essential component of residency training. The quality of the research presented at these meetings continues to impress the guests year after year. The meeting provides tremendous opportunities for sharing ideas, research and also socializing with colleagues from across the country. It enables residents to develop, as a group, into the orthopaedic surgeons of tomorrow.
