Department of Orthopaedics University of British Columbia Paediatric Orthopaedic Fellowship

Goals and Characteristics: The Paediatric Orthopaedic Fellowship at the University of British Columbia is a one-year programme based at British Columbia Children's Hospital. The goals are to perfect tertiary level skills in the management of paediatric orthopaedic problems. The program has an active outpatient load of 14,000 visits per year with daily operating room activities. We are the major trauma center for children for the province. The Fellow will be incorporated in the ongoing training programme based at Children's Hospital and will be expected to participate in this programnme. Ample opportunity is provided for clinical and basic research. Successful completion of an approved residency programme in orthopaedic surgery is required for an institutional license within the teaching institution.
The Department of Orthopaedics at the University of British Columbia also offers an academic paediatric orthopaedic fellowship which is 2 years in length. The clinical portion of the fellowship comprises 80% of the Fellow's activities in the first year and 20% in the second. The academic activities comprise 20% in the first year and 80% in the second year. At the conclusion of the second year, and on receipt of the thesis, the Fellow will be granted a Masters Degree in Surgery from the University. The areas of academic pursuit that are available include epidemiology and biomechanics, as well as molecular and growth biology. The aim of the academic fellowship is to equip the graduate with the resources necessary to enter academic practice.
