The current Spine Fellowship trains one surgeon at a time, primarily based with Dr. Bednar at the Hamilton General site. There is heavy exposure to adult reconstructive, trauma and tumour surgery. All levels and approaches (occiput to sacrum, anterior/posterior/posterolateral) are practiced regularly.
If desired, arrangements can be made for the Fellow to work in paediatric spine/scoliosis at the McMaster site.
The usual and advisable minimum training period is one full year. A second year can be arranged.
The trainee will be expected to produce at least one publication-quality manuscript while here, with extensive support from Dr. Bednar.
As the trainee's skills develop, he/she may have the opportunity to work with others but will always be very directly supervised by Dr. Bednar or another staff surgeon.
Intraoperative imaging with fluoroscopic guidance in pedicle screw insertion is most commonplace. Surgical navigation systems are also available.
