The Section of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Manitoba offers fellowship training programmes in four orthopaedic subspecialty areas:

• Arthroplasty - University of Manitoba Joint Replacement Group
• Winnipeg Spine Programme
• Sports Medicine and Upper Extremity Reconstruction
• Trauma

Arthroplasty:  This group consists of four arthroplasty surgeons who perform approximately 1,400 primary and revision hip and knee replacements per year, utilizing the most current techniques for primary hip and knee replacement surgery. The Group also has developed a strong research base consisting of a research database, an implant retrieval lab, and an RSA lab. 

Winnipeg Spine Programme:  A clinical spine fellowship has been designed to provide an extensive and well rounded exposure to all operative and nonoperative aspects of adult and paediatric spinal surgery. The fellow will gain familiarity with anterior and posterior and combined approaches to cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine with anterior and posterior instrumentation.

Sports Medicine and Upper Extremity Reconstruction Fellowship:  Extensive experience with knee shoulder reconstruction and upper extremity surgery is available through this fellowship. Three busy sports medicine surgeons contribute to the clinical load. Clinical research and outcome studies are also encouraged. Research support staff assist in outcome assessments and clinical trials. This fellowship takes place at the Pan Am Clinic which is a new state of the art facility complete with MRI, five operating rooms, abundant clinic space, dedicated research space, a skills lab and a biomechanics facility. 

Trauma:  This fellowship programme is aimed at orthopaedic graduates with an interest in adult trauma with the exclusion of spine. The programme is based entirely at the Health Sciences Centre which is the designated Trauma Centre for Manitoba, North-Western Ontario and Nunavut. Daily dedicated trauma operating rooms are staffed by programme faculty. In addition, there are up to three elective operating rooms per week which are aimed at dealing with post traumatic problems. Clinics are held most days and provide exposure to fracture follow-up and new patient referrals. Over 800 tertiary trauma operative cases are treated each year.

All fellows are expected to participate and contribute to the ongoing education of resident staff in the clinical setting. 

All fellowships being offered are 6-12 months in duration.
