Canadian Orthopaedic Foundation

The Canadian Orthopaedic Foundation is pleased to announce the recipients of its 2006 research grant awards. The number of applications funded is dictated by the success of the Foundation’s fundraising programmes during the year, the most important of which is Hip Hip Hooray!

Congratulations to the 2006 grant and award winners:cofbilingualcolour.jpg

  1. Dr. William Gage, Toronto Rehabilitation Institute/University of Toronto (Toronto) is awarded the Alexandra Kirkley Young Investigator Award for his research proposal entitled: Gait symmetry and knee arthroplasty: Before and after surgery, and implications for rehabilitation.
  2. Dr. Edward Harvey, McGill University Health Centre (Montreal) is awarded the Carroll A. Laurin Award for his research proposal entitled: Microtexturing of allograft to enhance fracture healing.

The prestigious J. Édouard Samson Award, recognizing excellence in orthopaedic research realized during the year at a Canadian Centre, will not be awarded in 2006. The Samson Award is the premier award of orthopaedic surgery in Canada. The list of past recipients of the Samson Award boasts some of the most accomplished orthopaedic surgeons and researchers that this country has ever produced. You are encouraged to apply so that you can take your rightful place in history!

The Foundation thanks all applicants for taking the time to apply for its research grants and awards. A total of 17 applications from researchers in Halifax, Quebec City, Montreal, Toronto, Hamilton, Calgary and Vancouver were received in 2006. Applications are graded and ranked by members of the Executive Committee of the Canadian Orthopaedic Research Society (CORS). The Executive Committee of the Foundation then applies the available funding to the top ranked applications.

Applications for the 2007 research grants and awards will open in December 2006. The deadline for submission of an application will be March 1, 2007. Please note the deadline for applications for the J. Édouard Samson Award for 2007 will be February 16. If a Samson Award winner is selected, he/she will present their research at the June 2007 COA meeting in Halifax. Applicants for the Samson Award will be notified in early April.
