Pfizer Becomes National Sponsor of Hip Hip Hooray
Pfizer Canada has officially signed on as the main National Sponsor of Hip Hip Hooray, taking over from Pharmacia, which had sponsored the event for the past five years. Pfizer became involved with Hip Hip Hooray following the company’s acquisition of Pharmacia, which was completed in 2003.
“Hip Hip Hooray is the most important fundraising event for the Canadian Orthopaedic Foundation and has a long history of success, so we’re extremely pleased to continue providing the support that Pharmacia did,” said Michael Amos, Manager, Corporate Affairs, Celebrex and Bextra at Pfizer Canada.
Pfizer’s sponsorship of Hip Hip Hooray is one of hundreds of activities and organizations that the company sponsors each year through its community investment programme. In 2002 (2003 figures are not yet available) Pfizer donated more than $12 million to organizations across the country that helped contribute to the well being of Canadians. In doing so, Pfizer is designated a Caring Company by Imagine, the Canadian Centre for Philanthropy’s program to encourage public and corporate giving and volunteering.
“Pfizer is not only the leading pharmaceutical company in terms of sales but is also a leader in arthritis care in Canada. Our primary goal is to improve the health and quality of life of Canadians with the disease, either by supporting research or partnering with organizations to develop innovative patient programs, said Pierre Gaudreault, Team Leader of Pfizer products Celebrex and Bextra. “And as many of the people who participate in Hip Hip Hooray are people with arthritis who have benefited from surgery, this programme is a great fit with that goal.”
In addition to community investment, Pfizer is the leading pharmaceutical investor in medical research in Canada, including an extensive clinical trials network in arthritis and other therapeutic areas. Some of the patient programmes and research projects that Pfizer supports through its Community Investment Program and research efforts include: The Bone and Joint Decade, The Arthritis Society’s web site (www.arthritis.ca), the innovative Patient Partners® in Arthritis program, and the Arthritis Treatment Program, an educational partnership with McMaster University and St. Joseph’s Healthcare in Hamilton.
