1) COA'S POSITION STATEMENT ON PODIATRY
The COA seeks to clarify the respective scopes of practice for orthopaedic surgeons and podiatrists with regard to treating and caring for patients with a wide variety of foot disorders. Developed in cooperation with Dr. Tim Daniels and his colleagues in the Canadian Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (COFAS), the COA has issued a position statement on orthopaedic care and podiatry.  The complete statement can be found on the COA web site under the Member Services > Health Policy tabs or by clicking here.

2) SECOND COMBINED MEETING OF THE COA AND THE AOA IN QUÉBEC CITY
Over 600 orthopaedic surgeons from across North America helped Québec City celebrate its 400^th anniversary in early June as the American Orthopaedic Association and the COA combined their annual meetings for the second time.  The event was also attended by 300 researchers, residents and other health care professionals.

Programme Co-Chairs Drs. Emil Schemitsch and Christopher Harner produced an exceptional scientific programme that explored the most relevant issues in orthopaedics today. The six major symposia, 17 instructional course lectures, more than 200 papers, 160 posters and six surgical Tips & Tricks sessions were appreciated by record numbers of attendees. The meeting evaluations were very positive for all of the sessions, including controversial speaker Marcia Angell, whose lecture, "Health Care: A Tale of Two Countries", sparked reaction and animated discussions from both Americans and Canadians. One of the hallmarks of any COA Annual Meeting is the networking opportunities that are a natural consequence of having several hundred like-minded professionals gather to discuss topics of mutual interest. This year's meeting elevated the networking to a whole new level. The primary social evening, A Night at the Museum, was a huge hit with the delegates. Our thanks to Dr. Pierre Mercier for his guidance and work to ensure that everyone had the opportunity to enjoy the charm and European flair of Québec City.

3) 2008 CORS FOUNDERS' MEDAL RECIPIENT
Congratulations are extended to Dr. Michael Tanzer (Montreal, QC) and his team for receiving the prestigious CORS Founders' Medal for their research titled "Skeletal Distribution of 14C Labeled Bisphosphonate after Local Elution from Porous Implants".  The Founders' medal is awarded to the authors of the most outstanding paper presented during the CORS scientific session.  Dr. Tanzer's research was presented during the COA and CORS Annual Meeting in Québec City last month.  Abstracts from these meetings can be found on the COA web site: http://www.coa-aco.org/.  Click on "Annual Meetings" and then on the Québec City 2008 link.

4) INAUGURAL MacHANd DAY
Presented by the McMaster University Hand, Arm, Nerve (MacHANd) Group, the MacHANd Day of Evaluation and Management of Disorders of the Upper Extremity will take place on November 5, 2008 in Hamilton, Ontario. 5) REDUCING DEMAND TODAY FOR TOMORROW'S SUSTAINABLE DELIVERY

6) GO WEST! COA MEETING HEADS TO WHISTLER
We would like to invite all COA members to attend the 2009 Annual Meeting in beautiful Whistler, British Columbia.  Hosted by Local Arrangements Chair, Dr. Robert Meek, and Programme Committee Chair, Dr. Pierre Guy, the 2009 Annual Meeting will be held in JULY instead of June.  Mark your calendars for July 3-6 and plan next summer's family holiday in Whistler.

7) RESIDENTS MAKE THEIR MARK ON QUÉBEC CITY
Eighty-seven residents from across the country attended the recent Canadian Orthopaedic Residents' Association (CORA) Annual Meeting that was held last month in Québec City.  Hosted by Drs. Ludovic Bouchard and Karine Gélinas-Chainé of Laval University, the CORA meeting included 18 resident research presentations along with special lectures by Drs. Jean Cournoyer, Marie-Josée Caron, Pierre Guy and Alastair Younger.  Congratulations go to Drs. Marlis Sabo (University of Western Ontario), Wadih Matar (University of Ottawa) and Michael Monument (University of Calgary) for winning first, second and third prize respectively for their research papers presented during the conference. The winning abstracts will be published in the Fall 2008 edition of the COA Bulletin.
