The AOA-Kellogg Leadership Series
A Must Attend Series for Orthopaedic Leaders
The American Orthopaedic Association (AOA) in conjunction with Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management launched a leadership programme titled, the AOA~Kellogg Leadership Series. The programme was developed to help orthopaedists think and act productively inside and outside the practice setting and to give participants an opportunity to learn about leadership as it relates to business issues, community involvement, advisory appointments and governance affairs. Orthopaedists who strive to be leaders in their field should register to attend this course.
"I’m wildly excited about the programme,” said Dan M. Spengler, M.D., President of the American Orthopaedic Association. “Careful planning with a strong emphasis on leadership has made this course a huge success – I’m going to recommend the programme to the entire faculty at my institution.”
Module One was introduced in November 2003 and continues to be appraised by attendees. Nine out of ten who attended the first module said the course filled a need in orthopaedic education and without hesitation, will attend and recommend forthcoming modules.
“I enjoyed learning the vocabulary of leadership and the techniques for implementation. I plan to apply the lessons I learned both in my career and when volunteering in community activities as well,” said Thomas R. Keifhaber, M.D., Cincinnati, Ohio orthopaedic surgeon.
The three-module series does not focus on orthopaedics, but rather on leadership as a whole. Course curriculum is based on current events and problematic issues facing leaders today. Regardless of career status, the high-level programmes are designed to be useful for all orthopaedists.
The AOA~Kellogg Leadership Series is presented in module format with each module offering interactive, engaging sessions that discuss issues related to the theme of the module. Modules are designed to be progressive, building on the knowledge and skills learned in the previous module.
-
Module One provides the content for leadership – the principal skills and competencies that catalyze the actions of others. Module One discusses leadership implications for organizational strategy development and organizational change. The module also practices the art of decision-making, influence and skillful persuasion.
-
Module Two puts theory into action – improving communication skills, leading organizational change; analyzing, acquiring and using influence and negotiation skills – all to help individuals become more effective leaders. Module Two is a highly-interactive module that will help in achieving success.
-
Module Three emphasizes the use of leadership skills in organizational governance, on formal and informal levels, (positioning for power, becoming an outstanding leader, crisis management). This module will help orthopaedists set new skills in motion as they continue to achieve leadership positions within orthopaedics and beyond.
The Kellogg School of Management was selected as partner for this programme based on its experience in organizational behavior and development, its expertise and demonstrated success in customized executive education, the outstanding qualifications of its faculty, and the quality and central location of its facilities. Kellogg is a leader in the executive education movement, having introduced the concept more than 50 years ago.
Each module will be held at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management located in Evanston, Illinois, near Chicago. The schedule for each module is Friday through Sunday beginning Friday at 11:30 a.m. with departure on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. The first two offerings of Module One were filled at maximum capacity. Currently 95 percent full, Module Two’s first session will take place in July 2004. Open registration for the third session of Module One, to be held November 12–14, 2004, is 50 percent full. Additional dates for future modules are currently being determined.
The need for strong leadership has never been greater than in today’s orthopaedic climate. In this rapidly changing professional environment, leadership is emerging as the critical issue for organizational and social evolution; it is as important as managerial sophistication and medical excellence. Leadership has become the catalyzing force that unites all levels of effort into a cohesive unit to achieve common professional and social goals.
