What Legacy Will You Leave to Your Profession?
Paul H. Wright, M.D., FRCSC
President, Canadian Orthopaedic Foundation
The Canadian Orthopaedic Foundation has a long and proud history of fostering orthopaedic research through its grants and awards programmes – from the first J. Édouard Samson Award of $250 presented in 1967, to the array of awards that total in the tens of thousands in 2004. Through its funding, the Foundation has retained researchers in Canada, and helped many researchers initiate work leading to much larger grants and significant discoveries – effectively contributing to improved innovation for better patient outcomes.
This would not be possible without the tireless efforts of the Foundation’s fund-raising volunteers and the generosity of its donors – many of whom are members of the Canadian Orthopaedic Association (COA) [see article: “Thank You to COA Member Donors” in this section]. As Canada’s patient voice for bone and joint health, the Foundation aims to inspire renewed commitment to improved health through – and to its legacy of – continued research conducted in Canada.
This October, the Foundation opens a special door for surgeons to become the Founders of the Canadian Orthopaedic Research Legacy. This special Legacy will form the basis of an endowment dedicated to funding Canadian research in orthopaedics. A gift to this programme through bequests, one-time or annual donations, will enable Canadian orthopaedic researchers to pursue new knowledge and will bestow Canadians with the benefits of that research.
There are many ways that you can help build this legacy. COA members who make a donation of $300 or more will be recognized as Founders of the Canadian Orthopaedic Research Legacy. Significant donations, long-term planned or deferred gifts and bequests will also be appropriately recognized in special ways. When you decide to make a donation yourself, let your colleagues know about the new programme and challenge them to match your donation. Full details and processes will be made available on the COA and Foundation web sites this fall.
In the meantime, I encourage you to consider the personal legacy you envision for the future. In our professional lives as surgeons, we’ve reached for and provided the best orthopaedic care possible for our patients. Through research and our gifts, we can translate those personal ideals into a permanent legacy that supports the continuing evolution of orthopaedics. Consider becoming a Founder of the Canadian Orthopaedic Research Legacy – your legacy that will enable orthopaedic research in Canada for years to come.
Have you already included the Canadian Orthopaedic Foundation in your will? If you have, please let the Foundation know about your future gift.
