The current emphasis on operating room efficiency along with a greater emphasis on avoiding medical errors has resulted in decreased resident independence in the operating room. This trend has resulted in a competence-based residency training program which is in complete contrast to the well established time-based training system. Drs. Bill Kraemer and Tim Carey will discuss the merits and drawbacks of both systems respectively.
