Edward H. Simmons, M.D., M. (Surg), FRCS (C), FACS of Youngstown NY, died peacefully at his home on May 9, 2009. He was born in Trenton Ontario, Canada, on February 2, 1926.

His military career included Corporal Second Battalion of the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment and Regimental Sergeant Major COTC University of Toronto. 

Dr. Simmons earned his Medical Degree in 1948 from the University of Toronto. Dr. Simmons had a long and distinguished career, with wide interests in orthopaedic surgery, particularly with regard to spinal disorders and deformity. His professional career included Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Toronto, Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, SUNY at Buffalo, Former Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery at Toronto East General and Orthopaedic Hospital, Former Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery at Buffalo General Hospital. 

Dr. Simmons was a member of the Scoliosis Research Society (Past President), Cervical Spine Research Society (Past President), Canadian Orthopaedic Association (Past President), and the American Orthopaedic Association. He was also involved in many other academic and professional organizations, nationally and internationally. 

Dr. Simmons was a passionate sailor and racer on Lake Ontario at the Royal Canadian Yacht Club and the Youngstown Yacht Club.

Dr. Simmons is survived by his wife M. Juanita (nee Shanks) Simmons of Youngstown, NY; his children Dr. Edward D. (Elizabeth) of Williamsville, NY, Nancy of Boonton, NJ, Dr. William (Jennifer) of Oakville, Ontario, and Ian (Lee) of Chevy Chase, MD; step-children Michael (Patricia) Robarts of Keswick, Ontario and Kathryn Robarts of Toronto, Ontario; 10 grandchildren; and his brother Wayne (Harriet) Simmons of Trenton, Ontario. Edward is predeceased by his parents Edward A. and Myrtle E. (nee Laing) Simmons and his first wife Marjorie Joyce (nee Finlayson) Simmons.
